A Chinese patent application inclined the development of a smartphone with Xiaomi lens for periscope.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is working on a new smartphone with a periscope lens.

According to a report from a Chinese publication MyDrivers, referring to the company's recent application to the State Intellectual Property Office of China below the title "Parts for cameras and electronic devices", the company seems to work on a camera equipped with a periscope camera. This type of camera design has been used in the past to provide optical zoom functions without increasing the thickness of the camera and lens modules.

The patent bears the application number CN201822150093.2 of December 20, 2018, which was made public a few days ago. We do not know yet which of its next Xiaomi smartphones will use this new technology. As this is a premium feature, you can expect it to be used by a premium smartphone such as the Mi Mix 4.

Several speculations have recently suggested that a company's next smartphone could use a 64-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor. Of course, as with all patents, it is unclear whether Xiaomi is developing this technology to patent it, or whether it is actually going to a nearby smartphone.

The flagship smartphones of Chinese brands, such as the Huawei P30 Pro and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, have already used a periscope lens to enhance the photographic experience.
